Award Descriptions

Cooperative Spirit Gold Award ($5,000)

Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union will announce 7 finalists on November 16, 2009. The winning finalist will be determined by a public voting process hosted at www.opcoop.coop from November 16 through November 20, 2009. The finalists who receives the most votes will receive the Cooperative Spirit Gold Award and a check for $5,000 for their cause. The winner will be announced November 23, 2009.

Recipients of all of the following awards will be selected by a jury of esteemed professionals from non-profit and cooperative organizations.

Cooperative Spirit Creative Award ($1,000)

This award will be given to a group or organization that demonstrates inspiring examples of creativity. Judges will evaluate the creativity both of the organization and of the creative project submission.

Cooperative Spirit Social Media Award ($500)

This award will be given to the group or organization that demonstrates best use of social media to advance and communicate their particular cause. 

Cooperative Spirit Shoestring Award ($500)

This award will be given to the group or organization that demonstrates best use of limited resources to advance and communicate their particular cause.

Sylvia Cavazos

Sylvia Cavazos : President

Emergency Assistance for Seattle Employees (EASE)
Sylvia Cavazos is a founding member and President of EASE (Emergency Assistance for Seattle Employees) in the City of Seattle. She works for Seattle Public Utilities where she has served in various functions in the department, including Intergovernmental Relations, Community Relations, and Communications. She is interested in Race and Social Justice issues and in seeing that ratepayer equity is built into the department’s business practices. She is on a number of boards and commissions, including the Fred Hutchinson Institutional Review Board.




Carlene Deits

FareStart
Carlene has been a FareStart staff member since early 2008, though she began her time with FareStart as a volunteer in 2007. She keeps close ties with the community through her work as Volunteer Coordinator, and is always on the lookout for ways to involve people in FareStart’s mission.

Sonia is responsible for individual and corporate fundraising at Washington CASH, as well as leading the community relations and marketing efforts for the organization. She is truly inspired by the entrepreneurs she meets, consults and works with every day.

Kathy Humphrey : Director, Community Relations

Amara
Kathy Humphrey has more than 28 years of experience in marketing and communications management for nonprofit organizations, mid-sized businesses, Fortune 500 corporations and government agencies. She leads Amara’s outreach efforts to find families interested in adopting infants, toddlers and older children from foster care.




Chris Iberle

Chris Iberle : Volunteer Coordinator

Food Lifeline
Chris has been a Volunteer Coordinator at Food Lifeline since 2007. He works with a wide range of community groups and volunteers as they come together to help rescue millions of pounds food for Western Washington food banks, meal programs, and shelters.




Caple Melton

Caple Melton : Marketing and Educational Outreach Worker

Central Co-op’s Madison Market
As a member of the collectively operated cooperative advancement team, Caple promotes the organization’s cooperative values and the Cooperative Movement. She serves as Central Co-op’s general propagandist, generating website copy, acting as publications editor, and playing public relations liaison.




Gregg Neilson

Gregg Neilson : General Manager

Student-run Radio Station C89.5 KNHC
Listener supported C89.5 is a pioneer in the dance music format and has a huge international audience via the Web. C89.5 is also a unique entrepreneurial training ground for high school students and is virtually the only student run, non-NPR, major market radio station in the country. Neilson has been at the helm of this program that has prepared many students to be distinguished professionals over the past 38 years.
