Stonewall Youth

How do you come together and share a resource?

Stonewall Youth is a non-profit community organization in Olympia, Washington that supports, informs, and advocates for youth ages 21 and under who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, queer or who have questions about their sexual orientation or gender identity. Stonewall Youth is committed to working within a social justice framework and seeing ourselves as part of a larger movement of social change. The organization was founded in 1991 and today provides a wide spectrum of services, including Youth Outreach, Peer Support Groups, and Community Education.

How would your group use the award money?

Stonewall Youth has been performing annual drag shows since 2000. This is an opportunity for queer youth to get on stage, be in control of their own image, and share their talent with the community. Every year the show seems to grow, get more creative, and draw a larger crowd than the previous year. In 2007 we started working with local artists and interns to help direct the show and help us channel our creative ideas. We would use the funds to help cover the costs of outside direction and space rental for this important and inspiring program.
