Orca K-8 School Garden

How do you come together and share a resource?
We have a fully integrated organic gardening and environmental science program at our K-8 School. We use our garden and greenhouse to grow organic starter plants to donate to local community groups that grow food for food banks in South Seattle. Students do all the planting, transplanting, and harvesting. We also have our own “giving gardens” in our school garden, with food that is grown, harvested, and delivered by students to the food bank. We also donate starter plants, curriculum, and ideas to local schools to start their own garden programs. We believe that our garden program can educate people about urban sustainability, poverty, and food security.
How would your group use the award money?
We would purchase seeds, seed cups, and compost to grow organic starter plants for community gardens. These plants would produce thousands of pounds of food for low income peoples in South Seattle. Through our partnerships with local food banks, community groups, and schools, we can create social change. With this social change being student lead, we can inspire a new generation of young community leaders.
