Latino College Prep

How do you come together and share a resource?

Latino College Prep is an after school program; designed to help Latino students to recognize resources to help them succeed in high school, but more importantly plan for a higher education!

We hold weekly meeting in our high school where we come together as a group to share our stories and make plans for our goals. We have a committee of upper classmen who I mentor along with the main student who began this program who is Ray Corona; and that committee is in charge of working with the younger classmen to deliver the same message given to them. We cover topics regarding their high school curriculum, to push and motivate students to higher academic standards. We also cover topics regarding to college for example, SAT/ACT prep, scholarships, financial aid, application process, community service, leadership, civic engagement, and personal choices. I along with Ray seek out different resources learn, teach and share those with our committee, so they can learn, teach and share those resources with all the other students.

How would your group use the award money?

We would use the money given to us to provide our students with food during our meetings, we would also provide our students with their own binder and a guide that they will use all throughout their high school career and possibly well after that. We will give out five $500 scholarships to our seniors that are moving on to college. We will set $1000 aside to send a couple of our students to different conferences as a reward for their involvement and contribution to Latino College Prep.
