Children's Therapy Center

How do you come together and share a resource?

Since 1979, Children’s Therapy Center has provided physical, occupational, and speech language therapy to children with special needs living in South King County. Our organizaiton is a model of cooperation. As part of Dynamic Family Services, a nonprofit consortium, Children’s Therapy Center share space, resources, administrative and management functions, and therapy expertise with four other programs. This greatly reduces our administrative costs and creates a lean, flexible organization.

Our Big Buddies social skills group brings together a diverse group of people including occuaptional therapists, speech language therapists, parents, and communication and development staff members. Additionally, we have created a safe environment for parents to support, guide, and share resources through our Parents Coffee Talk meetings held at the same time as the Big Buddies social groups.

How would your group use the award money?

Everyone needs a reason to celebrate! At the end of this ten-month program we would like to host a special evening for the Big Buddies and their parents. The evening would start with a special hosted dinner for the parents while the Big Buddies enjoy a meal with their therapists and friends. After dinner, our Big Buddies would compete in a Special Olympics with their teammates while staff and families cheer them on. An award from Operation Cooperation would fund both dinners and the Special Olympics. Any surplus funds would be used toward operational costs for the Big Buddies program and Parent Coffee Talk meetings.

This is a great program, one that needs to continue to provide these kids with the opportunity to be with peers and offer family support.
